Interview with Mother
1.Do you think the council thought about the enviroment when the plan was approved?
not knowing to much about the project i would think that environmental issues had to be considered during the planning of the hospital that said however political power and lobbying as well as addressing the community needs probably placed serval environmental issues to the bottom of the list.
2. How did this affect the animals habitats
the building of hospital meant that huge amounts of land had to be excavated it would be hoped that the animals who used that land as their home were able to re-establish themselves further into the bush. As long as the trend to eat into this forestry in the area doesn’t continue, i would think long term damage would be minimal.
3. How much bushland was destroyed? do you think they destroyed too much?
i don’t how much bush land was destroyed however i would have hoped that our local government planning department would ensure that absolutely no more than nessary was destroyed
4. Why was their so much controversy over the build of the hospital?
their has been a lot of controversy about the hospital due to the decision to allow it to be run by the private sector with the fear that our health service is becoming americanised and not allowing those who can’t pay in.
5. What are the good things and bad things about the hospital?
the downfalls have been possible environmental impacts, cost to tax payers and the controversy around its private/public partner ship. the upsides have been a boost to local economy and rejuvenation of the Frenchs forest area.

Interview with father
1.Do you think the council thought about the enviroment when the plan was approved?
Yes they would have. I know that for any development this big there has to be a lot of consultation and checks done before it is approved. The Northern Beaches Hospital project was so large, like there will be 1500 people working for them, that reports need to be done on things like how do all those extra people get to and from work. Many government and council departments would have been consulted. They would be concerned with things like how much rubbish will it produce and be managed. What about pollution and noise. Will there be places for people to live nearby, eat, exercise and hand out. Is there parking and so on. There would have been many Environmental Impact Statements commissioned and also reports by the Roads department and transport. All these things need to be weighed up.
2. How did this affect the animals habitats
The site is massive so I expect that there would be definitely some impact. One of the parts of the Environmental Impact Assessment is specifically about the effect on animals, trees etc. I think its called a Biodiversity Impact Statement or appendix. Something like that. The site is relatively well self contained so the impact is localised. I couldn't say what the impact will be as it is not finished but I can say for a fact that the animals that were there are not there any more! Whether some of the more significant animals like wombats or koalas were relocated or not I do not know. I suspect they were or at least it was attempted. I'm quite pragmatic about things like this and sometimes that is the price of progress.
3. How much bushland was destroyed? do you think they destroyed too much?
the site is about the same size or smaller that the school next door so I would guess that it would be less than 10 hectares. I reckon you would have this information in the EIS. The environmental impact statement.
4. Why was their so much controversy over the build of the hospital?
As far as I remember it was mostly about the size of the project and how it would disrupt the area during construction. Then next worries that the area could not handle the amount of new people to the area to live and work. The other main objection was about the effect on the environment and the animals. Oh and another thing was the fact that both Manly and Mona Vale hospital will be no more. Manly is to close and Mona Vale will be repurposed to another function. That impacts people who rely on their services.Building height. Yes, that was another. It's high but not super high and well designed into the bush.
5. What are the good things and bad things about the hospital?
Loads. It's going to be state of the art. As a top level hospital it will have many operating theaters, a huge emergency department. There will be facilities for emergency helicopter services. Before it was necessary to travel out of the area to get some treatments like chemo but not any more.
An important thing I like is it will also be a major training and education hospital as well. Not to be discounted as well is the boom for the local areas from all the new staff and families. That will help local businesses and tradesmen. Another positive side effect now that I think about it is a lot of new development and upgraded to the surrounding area will have been done. Better roads and more modern facilities.
